Normally, unimpeded blood flow is vital to health and proper bodily function. However, sometimes cutting down on blood flow to certain parts of the body can relieve the troubling or painful symptoms of a variety of conditions such as prostate gland enlargement, severe knee pain caused by inflammation, etc. Embolization is a minimally invasive procedure whereby a tiny tube or catheter, inserted via a tiny skin puncture, is navigated through the blood vessels, using fluoroscopic (X-ray) guidance, to a desired target site where minute particles (or sometimes a glue-like substance or metallic coils) are injected to reduce or block blood flow, leading to an improvement of symptoms.
The lead physician for Embokare is George P. Teitelbaum, M.D., FSIR, a board-certified interventional radiologist and interventional neuroradiogist. He has more than 38 years of endovascular procedure experience. He graduated from UCLA with a B.S. in biochemistry and earned his M.D. degree from UC San Diego and is a Fellow at the Society of Interventional Radiology.
After serving as a surgery intern at UC San Diego, Dr. Teitelbaum completed his radiology residency at UC Irvine. He subsequently competed fellowships in Interventional Radiology (George Washington University Hospital, Washington, D.C.), Magnetric Resonance Imaging (the Huntington Medical Research Institute, Pasadena, CA),Interventional Neuroradiology (UC San Francisco, San Francisco, CA), and Prostate Embolization (San Jose Hospital, Lisbon, Portugal). He has served on the medical faculties of Thomas Jefferson University, Georgetown University, the Keck/USC School of Medicine, and Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA). At USC and CHLA, and subsequently at Providence St. Joseph Medical Center, he has been the director of Interventional Neuroradiology.
He is the author/co-author of more than 100 peer-reviewed scientific journal articles, and he has been issued multiple U.S. and international patents for a variety of medical device inventions. While at Providence, Dr. Teitelbaum has performed among the largest series of endovascular operations in all of Southern California for acute strokes, cerebral aneurysms, and brain and spinal vascular malformations. In 2015, he introduced prostate embolization to the Los Angeles area.
All of our doctors are fully licensed and board certified, and we hold our entire medical staff to the highest safety standards.
